A vision board is a brilliant way to help you set out your goals and stay motivated while you work on them.

How many times have you made a list of goals and then filed them away and eventually forgotten about them?

What about that business plan you created when you started out?  When was the last time you looked at it?  Can you even remember where you saved it?

A vision board is a constant visual reminder of what you want to achieve, inspiring you to keep your goals at the forefront of your mind.

Before we dive into why vision boards are so powerful and how to make one, let’s talk about what a vision board actually is.

1. What is a Vision Board?

A vision board is a montage or collage of images that depict the future goals you want to achieve.   It’s a visual representation of the life you want to have or the dreams you want to turn into reality.

It’s made up of images that encapsulate your dream, or depict the outcome you want to achieve.   It can be just pictures, or you can add words phrases, captions, even affirmations and mantras if that’s your thing.

2. Why is a Vision Board so Powerful?

Clarity

Creating a vision board helps you get clarity on what is really important to you.

As you work through deciding which goals to include and which to leave off, you’re creating a roadmap of intentions and prioritising what you want to achieve in the coming months.

Focus

The actual process of creating the vision board – whether physical or digital allows you to organise and analyse your thoughts, giving meaning and priority to them.   You’re essentially programming your brain to say “this is what is important to me, this is what I want to focus on next”.

By repeatedly imagining a successful outcome, you strengthen the neural connections related to that activity, making it easier to achieve.    You’re training your brain to get used to the idea of success.

Keeping goals Present

When you save your vision board somewhere you can see it and look at it often – ideally daily, you’re keeping it present and uppermost in your thoughts.

It’s really common to have good intentions and then as we get busy, forget about our original plans and lose sight of our goals.

A vision board serves as a constant reminder of your “why” and what’s important to you, keeping your goals in plain sight.

Motivation

A vision board should make you smile and inspire you when you look at it. It’s like a little boost of inspiration and motivation, cheering you on as you think about the goals you’ve set for yourself.

My vision board sits on my desktop, I see it every time I switch on my laptop. It’s a reminder of my “why” and what’s important to me.    And it never fails to make me smile and give me a boost.

Confidence

As you visualise achieving your goals, you are reinforcing your self-belief and determination to succeed.

Regularly checking in on your progress towards achieving your intentions and goals helps to build confidence – especially as you update your board with new goals after completing each one.

Don’t forget to celebrate as you replace an old goal with a new one.

3. How to make a Vision Board

You can either create a vision board the old fashioned way using magazines and printed photos or create it digitally.

Doing it the old fashioned way, you simply cut out the pictures and arrange them on a board of piece of card.   Stick them down with glue, or attach the images with clips.    Or maybe you would prefer to pin them to a lovely corkboard?

Creating a digital vision board is easy, thanks to all the amazing software programs out there. You can create a vision board  using the free version of Canva or try out one of the various specialised apps.

Alternatively, you could even use PowerPoint. Simply create a blank slide and start adding your photos and images to it.

My top tip

Here’s my top tip on making your vision board as meaningful as possible.

Ideally, you want every image on your vision board to give you a boost of positivity, inspiration and motivation.  Choose images that delight you and inspire you.

It may take some time to find that perfect image – don’t let it stop you.  You can always use a placeholder image to get started and go back and update it with a better image when you find it.

4. What to use a vision board for

Ever wondered what to include on a vision board?

There’s no right or wrong – it’s your vision board, you can make it about whatever you want and what’s most important to you to focus on in the coming months.

if you’re using a vision board for your life goals, think of it like a mini highlight reel of what you want to achieve.

Maybe you want to start some new healthier habits?  You could make a vision board that focuses purely on improving your health and wellness.   Why not fill it with inspirational pictures to help you keep motivated and inspired to keep going?

When you keep it somewhere that you see often, it can be a great visual reminder to drink more water, eat a healthy snack, go out for that walk ..

If you want to try out some new hobbies, you could use your vision board to depict each hobby that you want to try in the next six months – think of it like a visual checklist of things to experiment with.

Perhaps your goal is to start a podcast, or launch a new program?     Using images to map out your business goals is a great way to keep you on track.  Use it like a mini visual business plan with milestone projects that you can look at every day for inspiration and motivation.

And finally

So, to wrap it all up, vision boards are an amazing way to figure out what you really want, stay motivated, and keep your goals front and centre.  They’re a powerful and  inspirational reminder of what’s important to you.  Whether you’re trying to improve your health and wellbeing, make some important life changes,  or rock your business goals, a vision board is a brilliant tool to keep you motivated and on track.
